I discovered this image by Alex Alemany almost a decade ago. It fascinated me then and still does today.
Recently, I realized that it perfectly illustrates the concept of self-reflection and recursive awareness that’s central to the inner leadership work I do.
This artist painted a picture of himself painting himself. My work helps leaders learn this kind of deep self-observation.
It’s a great visual representation of infinite self-awareness.
This is way beyond the surface-level awareness commonly discussed. This relates to what I do in several key ways:
- Multiple levels of awareness – The painting reveals layers of the artist’s self-observation. I help leaders observe their thoughts, behaviors, and patterns with greater awareness.
- Breaking free from autopilot – This image represents stepping outside oneself to see clearly. Similarly, I guide people to step out of their habitual thinking to observe themselves from a new perspective.
- Creative self-discovery – Just like an artist uses their craft, I engage in transformative talks and visual designs. This helps leaders find their true selves.
I find it’s a powerful metaphor for the kind of recursive self-awareness that emerges when we learn to observe ourselves beyond our usual thinking mind.
