Deep Below the Surface

Leadership Beyond the Surface

I want to tell you about a moment deep below the surface.

Our nuclear submarine was sinking to the ocean bottom. But what happened next revealed something even deeper about leadership.

In that moment, we discovered that leadership isn’t about doing or trying.

It’s about being the awareness through which transformation naturally flows.

When we simply became present to what was… natural leadership emerged.

Deep below the surface – both literally and within ourselves – we discovered the truth about leadership.

We are not the doers of leadership.

We are the awareness through which leadership naturally flows.

Leadership: It’s Not What You Think

Think about your best moment as a leader.

Maybe it was a crisis. A crucial decision. A breakthrough with your team.

In that moment, were you trying to be a leader?

Were you thinking about frameworks or strategies or character?

No. You were simply there. Fully present. And leadership flowed naturally.

That’s the truth about leadership we keep overlooking.

That’s why it’s so important for leaders to transcend the mind and ego to uncover deep inner awareness.

Because as long as leadership is filtered through the mind and ego, it remains an identity we try to uphold, a role we play.

But true leadership occurs when we step beyond identification with our minds and into pure awareness.

For in that space, there is no trying, no attachment to outcomes, no seeking of validation.

The greatest leaders don’t act from a personal sense of self. They allow something deeper to move through them.

This is why transcending the mind and ego is not merely important; it serves as the very foundation of authentic leadership.

Transcending the mind and ego is not just important. It’s the very foundation of true leadership.
